Flood Relief 2010-2012

2010:  News from CHARSADDA:

Death hauntd the district of Charsadda in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa. Ruined houses, dead cattle and hapless survivors seen imploring for aid, those were the scenes as one came across while travelling from Peshawar to Charsadda.

Though most parts of Charsadda were ravaged by the deluge, the area between the Khiyali and Jindi rivers was the worst hit. Every village and hamlet lied in ruins. Sardarayb, the famous picnic point on the banks of the Kabul river, wore a haunted look, with no fish vendors, no boatmen, and no picnickers. It was knee-deep stinking mud everywhere. And a pall of gloom hanged over the area.

A large strip of the Peshawar-Charsadda road was under floodwater. And in villages along both sides of the road survivors could be seen rummaging through the rubble of their houses to look for any valuables.

Ashraf Medical Complex opened its doors and helped where ever possible, on its premises as well as many medical/relief camps at various sites in the flood affected area.

Many people and teams of doctors from the UK, Canada and USA joined selflessly in AMC’S endeavor to help the people. Dr. Ashraf opened his home as well for these foreign volunteers and extended usual Pashtun hospitality to these honorable people to make their stay safe and comfortable. Of note was a Canada based organization IDRF headed by Drs Casim and Naema Degani, eminent personalities in Toronto, who ran the medical camps tirelessly. Other organizations who joined up with AMC were Real Medicine headed by Dr Zahoor and CDRS headed by Tod Shea.

AMC ran this relief program for nearly two years on daily basis and about Eighty thousand patients were seen who were given medical help as well as help in kind like milk, edible oil, pampers, clothes, quilts and hygiene kits etc.
